Perhaps your search for love was something like my journey. High School, trouble at home, friends who helped but just didnt fill that void within. That ongoing cultural drum beat of sex. The message that fame and fortune were the way to go along with that just right female companion. It wasnt that there was no spiritual component to my life it was just that it seemed to be more a set of rules than the true Answer to all of the questions of my life. So there was an easy slide into so much that was cool and in followed by the long, slow agonizing process of waking up and saying, is that all there is? Weve all heard the words of the Waylon Jennings song: Looking for love in all the wrong places. Looking for love in too many faces. We all want love and we search for love or some substitute for love. We have an infinite desire to know. An endless thirst and desire to be filled. We share a nature that asks, Why?" from the time we are a child. Yet we allow that "why" to get beat out of us along the way. We find ways to distract ourselves from the pains and disappointments of life. For some, like me, it may have been in part through sex, and through that search for fame and fortune. For others, it may be drugs, alcohol, career, entertainment, fun and games and so on. But the very fact that our longings are infinite should tell us that only something or SomeOne - Who is Infinite can truly fill us! We want truth, we want light, we want love! But we often fail to seek these things or fail to seek them properly - in the arena of our faith-life. There are the thrills of the start of a relationship. There are the disappointments of the later failures. There is the high of success in career. We know even the most 'successful' in life are looking for more. One never gets enough success, long enough applause or accolades. We often find that the success we do attain may slip away for reasons seemingly beyond our control. No matter how good the movie, how thrilling the high, what ever the escape we chooseit does come to an end. Then we are leftempty, still wanting, still waiting. Still looking for love. There are many modern fables about religion and spirituality. We are told by the culture that everything is relative, everything is about tolerance, that what works for me may not work for you. While we are all different, and we all have a unique life-journey, this doesnt mean that there are no ultimate truths! This doesnt mean that there is no pure Light and endless Love! We can and should respect each other, and defend the right of people to make their own choices. But just as there are truths in math, science, medicine, music, history, business and so on, so too there are truths in the realm of faith, religion and the spiritual life. Just as a teacher can and should teach the truth of their subject, so too there is a crying need today for people to today to teach the truths about the purpose and meaning of life. These truths can begin to be found in the fact that we are created beings whose souls will live forever. Just as we spend some 9 months in the womb before we are born into this life, so too this life is a preparation for a life that is to come. Just as we develop in the womb, so too do we develop and grow over time in this life. Here in this world, we find light and darkness mixed. Here we can find some love and yes, we find hatred and disappointments. In this life we find truth and falsehood are often confused. But we have that thirst for truth, we long to leave darkness for light, and we yearn for a love that is a part of our very being! Is there no answer to these things? Are we the victims of a cosmic joke? No. But just as any part of our education takes time, discipline and effort, so too the search and study of the meaning of our life, and these truths of faith take time. Some give up on this search too soon. Our current understanding may well be a preparation for the fullness of truth that is waiting for us, just as soon as we are ready for it. Just as pain in the body tells us that there is something wrong, and we need to correct it, so too the pains of our life can be a message that tells us that something in our life needs to be changed until we are on the path we were meant to be on. Those who say that we can avoid suffering and disappointment are selling something! But for those who are fortunate, we learn that suffering can have meaning, if we search for it. Those who say there are no answers, or that everything is relative are living a contradiction! They just supplied their answer, they just made a claim for an absolute truth while denying that there are absolute truths! In this brief article, one can at best tantalize the mind and soul, challenge it to look beyond where one may find ones self in their day to day existence. For those who doubt that there is a God, or that there are knowable and ultimate truths, they simply have to begin with other parts of their life to realize that they depend on the truths of math to balance their checkbook. They depend on their lungs to take in good air and dispel the bad.
